DCU has been a long-term friend and asset for the DEC family. Unfortunately, with the recent death of my mother, I saw first hand that their goal of becoming a BIG financial institution has been achieved. Their insensitivity, downright rudeness, and inflexible policies left us with no access to her DCU accounts (not even to view them) when we most needed to balance lots of her estate financial issues.

With large numbers of DEC alumni now in their 60's and 70's, they should be aware that there are DCU policies that need to be planned for if the primary member in a joint DCU account dies. Most will assume that because it is a joint account it will continue to be available to the surviving partner, but that is not the case. When DCU is notified the primary member (and there can be only one) is deceased, they freeze the account.

DCU is our primary financial institution so all our key tools and assets are accessed through them. I do not want my wife to go online to find a frozen account and non-responsive telephone support. There are enough DEC Alumni to get their attention and put in place processes that fix this problem.
